Clubs pitch in to help a mate

A TWENTY20 cricket match between Officer’s cricket and football clubs this Sunday will raise funds for cancer-stricken player Kable Dowsett.
Mr Kable, 37, a long-time play-er at both clubs, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma – a cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow – after breaking a hip in three places during a football pract-ice match about a year ago.
A percentage of the proceeds from Sunday’s game will go directly to Mr Kable’s trust fund.
There will also be raffles and a silent auction on the day.
A fundraiser by the Officer Cricket Club and the ROC Football and Netball Club raised more than $20,000 for the fund and the Multiple Myeloma Cancer Research Fund last year.
Mr Kable is recovering at home after receiving a bone marrow/stem cell transplant from his brother Lee last month.
His father Rob said things were looking up.
“He’s on track for recovery but it’s a long process,” Rob said.
Sportspeople from across the region are encouraged to attend Sunday’s fundraiser where former Australian cricketer Rodney Hogg will be a guest speaker at the cricket club’s life-members and sponsors luncheon.
The day kicks off at 9.30am with junior teams going head to head.
Officer’s senior cricket and football teams will then take to the pitch for the Twenty20 game at 12.30pm.
There will be prizes for spectators, including boundary catch and first fielder’s catch.
A barbecue lunch is available.
People wanting to donate items for the silent auction can call Tania Taylor on 0439 632 909.
