NAR NAR GOON trainer John Leek Jnr reaped the benefits of Pakenham Racing Club’s extra race meet on Friday, combining with Cranbourne jockey Peter Mertens to take out the Gippsland Phones 0-72 Handicap with gelding Hachiman.
The six-year-old picked up his second win in as many weeks, following a win at Seymour on 14 April.
Hachiman won the 1750m race five by two lengths from Luke Oliver-trained Cool Point, with Pakenham trainer Giuseppe Alati’s Optimal in third.
But Alati had already had a winner for the day, with five-year-old gelding Sheemsa getting up in race two, three-and-a-half lengths clear of Woodytwoshoes in second.
The day saw two apprentice jockeys step up for victories as well, with Ben Knobel (on Vive Le Rock) and Michael Connick (on Morinasso) both collecting wins.
The meet was originally scheduled to be run in Geelong, but was moved because of ongoing track problems and Pakenham offered a helping hand.
Pakenham’s next race meeting will be on Saturday 9 May.
