Demand sparks good competition

COMPETITION and demand were very strong for a slightly larger yarding at VLE Pakenham that included a small number of grown steers and heifers.
It was difficult to convey how good the sale was as prices were generally unchanged to four cents per kilogram dearer. But some of the top prices, or the next run down were for a heavier run of steers and heifers, and feedlots continued to set the pace on a large percentage of the cattle.
Nearly 300 vealers were penned, and the best quality steers and heifers made between 212 cents and 239.6 cents per kilogram. Supplementary-fed yearlings made up a larger percentage of the yarding, and the best quality B muscle cattle made between 212 cents and 230 cents per kilogram. Some of the highest price cattle weighed up to 510 kilograms liveweight.
The strength of the sale was seen for a larger run of C muscle and better quality D muscle steers and heifers, both vealers and yearlings, that sold to the trade and lot feeders.
Not many cattle made less than 170 cents with most making from this figure to 215 cents per kilogram.
Many pens of heifers were purchased to feed from 172 cents to 192 cents, and steers between 175 cents and 195 cents per kilogram. Prices for the plainest quality cattle were from 145 cents to 165 cents per kilogram and included a large variety of weights, breeding and age.
Continued very strong demand for heavy steers, grown steers and bullocks saw a further price increase of up to eight cents per kilogram. Prices were between 170 cents and 198.6 cents for steers and 191 cents per kilogram for bullocks. A small selection of grown heifers sold very well with prices varying from 140 cents to 173 cents per kilogram.
